Transnet chairperson Linda Mabaso on Friday said the passing of human rights lawyer and Transnet board member Peter Williams was a “double blow to our nation”, noting that he still had many years of wisdom and guidance to bestow upon the country.

Williams, 49, passed away on Wednesday after battling cancer. He was appointed to the Transnet board in December 2014.

“Having worked with Peter for a number of years, I found him to be a man of dignity and quiet courage. His wise counsel in all matters kept us on the straight and narrow,” said Mabaso.

Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown added that Williams was quiet, but firm. “An attorney by profession, he was a patriot and steadfast activist. He enriched the Transnet board with his authoritative views on governance and will be sorely missed,” she noted.
