Name and Location
Solar market garden and electricity projects, Kalalé district, Benin.

Project Description
The Kalalé region has a population of about 100 000 people, who are unable to produce enough agricultural produce for their needs, have limited access to water and do not have access to the electricity grid.

The project involves plans to enable female farmers to grow fruit and vegetables during the six-month dry season between November and April, in the rural villages of Bessassi and Dunkassa. The project facilitates the generation of income, as women will be able to sell fresh produce at the local market. A pilot project was launched, which comprises the installation of a solar-powered drip irrigation system to pump water for crops. A 2,1-kW power supply provides all the energy required for the pumps. Another aspect of the project will generate solar electricity for schools, health clinics, water-pumping systems, street lighting and wireless Internet access.
