Name and Location
Sirari Corridor rehabilitation project, Kenya.

Client
Kenya National Highways Authority.

Project Description
The project involves the rehabilitation of a 172 km stretch of road, linking the towns of Isebania and Ahero, an axis located south-east of Lake Victoria. The road forms part of the Sirari Corridor, a major trade route linking Tanzania, Kenya and South Sudan.

The renovation of this route will facilitate trade between Kenya and Tanzania, while the social aspects associated with the project will accelerate the socioeconomic development of the regions along the road, benefiting nearly two-million people.

The construction of 77 km of secondary roads will also allow producers to get their products to the consumption centres. The project also includes funding for several markets along the road.

Nyabondo Hospital, located on the route, will be equipped with six ambulances and a department specialising in road accidents.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) will also fund the deployment of an information system for the monitoring and prevention of traffic accidents.

This system will be part of a technical assistance and training programme for the benefit of the Kenya National Highways Authority.

Value
The project is estimated at $280.26-million.

The AfDB has approved a $228-million loan to the government of Kenya to rehabilitate the road.

Duration
The rehabilitation of the road is expected to be undertaken from 2016 to 2019.
