Sasol Chemical Industries (SCI), which was found guilty by the Competition Tribunal of charging excessive prices on propylene and polypropylene between 2004 and 2007, said on Thursday that it had decided to lodge an appeal against the decision.

SCI said in a statement that a notice of appeal would be filed with the Competition Appeal Court on June 27, 2014.

On June 5, the tribunal imposed a fine of R205.2-million in respect of purified propylene and R328.8-million in respect of polypropylene.

It also ordered SCI to desist from future price discrimination when selling purified propylene and ordered the firm and the Competition Commission to formulate a new non-discriminatory pricing remedy.

The company was also ordered to sell polypropylene on an ex-works basis without discriminating in price between any of its customers no matter where they were located.
