Sasol officially launches 2017 GTC Championship
The Sasol GTC Championship team on Thursday welcomed newest team member Robert Wolk, who will be behind the wheel of the team’s BMW GTC racer.
Thirty-one-year-old Wolk replaces Hennie Groenewald, who stepped down to start a new business venture in Cape Town. Wolk has been racing since the age of nine, winning nine single-seater championships in Formula Ford and Formula Volkswagen in his 22-year racing career.
He spent three years racing a BMW in the production car series in the mid-to-late 2000s.
Sasol, which sponsors the GTC Championship series, is the official fuel supplier and television broadcast sponsor, officially launched the new GTC Championship series for 2017 on Thursday, with the first race to take place at the Killarney International Raceway, in Cape Town, on March 25.
Here, the Sasol GTC Racing Team will compete in two 40-km-long races.
The GTC Championship series 2017 has also been extended to nine rounds, from the previous year’s six. Races will also be held at the Aldo Scribante racetrack, in Port Elizabeth; the East London Grand Prix Circuit and the newly upgraded Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, in Midrand, finishing at Zwartkops Raceway, in Pretoria, at the end of November.
Speaking at the launch, Sasol VP Ed Cameron said the sponsorship was a “laboratory on wheels”, which enabled the company to conduct research on the performance of its products.
Cameron called on the public to support the motorsporting world. “It is a combination of human intellect – you have to be wide awake, very sharp – science and technology, human endurance and bravery. It is truly a unique sport,” he noted.
