Sappi CEO to step down owing to ill health
Global pulp and paper company Sappi announced on Wednesday that its CEO of almost seven years, Ralph Boëttger, would be relinquishing his position as CEO and director on June 30 as he had been diagnosed with a serious illness.
Sappi board chairperson Dr Danie Cronjé said: “I personally and on behalf of the board and everyone at Sappi, express heartfelt thanks to Ralph for the sterling work he has done in leading Sappi through a particularly challenging period in the company’s proud history.”
He explained that, under Boëttger’s leadership, the group had been transformed, noting that a clear strategy and sound action plans were in place, with the major projects to reposition the group successfully completed and operational, leaving the company in a position for growth into the future.
“A process is in place to identify Ralph’s successor and to allow for a timeous and smooth hand-over,” Cronje added.
Commenting on his decision, Boëttger said: “I deeply regret having to make this decision at this time as I am convinced that Sappi stands on the cusp of a period of strong performance and exciting growth.”
However, he believed that spending his time with his family had become a priority and that it was in the best interest of the company and his family for him to step down.
“I would like to thank Dr Cronjé, the board of Sappi and every employee for their support and dedication in repositioning Sappi for a great future,” Boëttger concluded.
