Name and Location
Rumakali hydroelectric power project, Iringa, Tanzania.

Project Description
The project proposes to build a 222-MW hydroelectric power plant and its associated infrastructure in the region of Iringa, some 500 km west of Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania. The unit is expected to generate enough electricity to cater for almost 25% of Tanzania's overall power demands on a daily basis.

The output generated by the project will be sold to State-owned power utility Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) and it will also be distributed to nearby villages, which are not connected to the national electricity grid.

In the course of the project, some 140 km of power lines will be laid.

Value
The project cost is estimated at $700-million.

Duration
Construction of the power station will begin in 2013, with the plant expected to be operational by 2018.

Client
The government of Tanzania.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Borodino (construction).

Latest Developments
The government of Tanzania has signed a contract with Russia's Borodino group of companies to construct the hydroelectric plant, which will conceivably meet almost a quarter of the country's daily electricity demand of 897 MW, of which Tanesco is only able to generate 793 MW.

On Budget and on Time?
It is reported that 75% of the preparatory work on financial, technical settlement and regulatory aspects of the project is already complete.
