The newly renovated Nelson Mandela Square was revealed to stakeholders and the media on Tuesday night following the investment of more than R300-million.

The renovations included the installation of a new contemporary logo above the iconic 6-m-tall Nelson Mandela statue, cross-vaulted ceilings, double volume glass facades, skylights and marble floors.

The square also introduced international brands, such as Forever 21, Hamleys and Thomas Pink, besides others.

The Nelson Mandela Square, adjoining Sandton City Shopping Centre, is owned by financial services provider Liberty Group. It boasted over 80 exclusive retailers, fine dining restaurants and was also a popular tourist destination.

Liberty Property Portfolio fund manager Alex Phakathi said the Nelson Mandela Square was renovated in a fashion that fitted its position as one of Africa’s premier shopping locations, which was a favourite with locals and tourists alike.

“‘Discover, Experience, Indulge’ is the ideal way to explain the allure of this lifestyle destination; there is so much that is new, state-of-the-art and luxurious to discover, experience and indulge in.

“The next era for Nelson Mandela Square is about to begin and we are honoured to have brought this revered old beauty through her transformation while still retaining her original charm,” he said.
