Minerals and metals processing service and technology provider Outotec on Monday announced that it planned to acquire private Australian company Kempe Engineering's aluminium smelter technologies and its service and spare parts businesses in the Middle East and Africa for an undisclosed price.

The acquisition, expected to close in February, would strengthen Outotec’s technology for aluminium smelters, operation and maintenance services, modernisation services and spare parts, double its installed base and provide new capabilities to expand the service business.

Much of Kempe's proprietary equipment would complement Outotec's aluminium product portfolio and enable further global growth of Outotec's equipment and spare parts business, said Outotec CEO Pertti Korhonen in a statement.

Nearly 400 Kempe employees would transfer to Outotec’s 5 000-strong global employee base, as Outotec worked to double the volumes of the newly acquired business that reported current sales of €25-million a year.
