Name and Location
Ohorongo cement plant, Namibia.

Project Description
The project entailed the construction of Namibia’s first cement production plant, between Tsumeb and Otavi, some 435 km north of Windhoek. The project comprised the construction of a grinding mill, access roads, a railway track and associated housing facilities for the workforce.

The facility has a production capacity of 700 000 t/y and covers many aspects of cement production, from raw material preparation to cement dispatching.

It also features the most advanced technology aimed at improving energy efficiency, and uses an encroacher bush to supply up to 30% of the plant’s energy requirements.

Moreover, the plant will use air quenching instead of traditional water conditioning to save up to 220 m3/d of water.

Value
The project cost N$2,5-billion.

Duration
First cement production started in December 2010, with the first two trucks of cement departing from the facility in January 2011, two months ahead of the original schedule.

Client
Ohorongo Cement, a subsidiary of Germany’s Schwenk Zement.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
European Investment Bank (EIB), Deutsche Investitions und Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG) and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) (debt finance).

Latest Developments
