NRF appoints new CEO
University of South Africa institutional development VP Dr Molapo Qhobela has been appointed CEO of the National Research Foundation (NRF) for a five-year term.
Former CEO Dr Albert van Jaarsveld left the NRF in February to take up an appointment as vice-chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
“Dr Qhobela brings with him a wealth of experience gained in leading development of a significant number of policies and strategies, at the departments of Education and Science and Technology, which have shaped the nature and operations of the South African university and education system.
“He has exceptional knowledge of the South African higher education system and the National Innovation agenda, which will serve him well in his new position,” said Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor.
NRF chairperson Professor Loyiso Nongxa added that the appointment came at an opportune time for the NRF, having just adopted a new strategy, Vision 2020.
“A good strategic leader and a seasoned executive with extensive policy and administration experience, Dr Qhobela is well placed to lead the organisation as it rolls out its new strategy. We congratulate Dr Qhobela and look forward to his contributions as CEO of the NRF and member of the NRF board,” he added.
Qhobela had also been affiliated with the University of Cape Town between 1993 and 1998 and Rhodes University between 1991 and 1993.
