Steel and aluminium plant processing technology, equipment and services specialist SMS Siemag supplied a complete cold rolling mill to Turkey-based aluminium company Asas-Alüminyum for its new works at Adapazan-Akyazi, about 150 km to the east of Istanbul.

Asas-Alüminyum’s new works, estimated at about €250-million, has been designed for a future capacity of 350 000 t/y and has an overall surface area of 750 000 m2. It comprises a strip caster, cold-rolling mill with strip-processing line and a foil rolling mill. The facility is currently undergoing acceptance tests, with plans to start full production in this quarter.

Rolling Mill Features
The cold-rolling mill comprises a six-high mill stand, three shearing lines and a strip-coating line designed for 50 000 t/y. The mill stand is equipped with intermediate and work-roll bending, the first of this type of construction in Turkey. Further, on the basis of its design, such as the degree of automation, it is one of the most up to date of its type, according to the company.

The cold-rolling stand reduces the cast strips in widths of up to 2 200 mm, to gauges of down to 0.1 mm and at rolling speeds of 1 500 m/min.

Depending on the desired final condition, these products are manufactured as strips and sheet for differing intended uses, such as architectural strip for subsequent painting or as prerolled strip for the foil rolling mill, SMS Siemag explains.

To ensure European standards regarding flatness, the mill stand is also equipped with a strip tensiometer roll and with a hot-edge spray system. Information management system precision thickness gauges in the entry and exit sections assist the strip gauge control, while the mill stand has been equipped with the patented dry strip drying system, a multiplate filter and an airwash exhaust-air purification system for environmental protection.

Regarding the decision to invest in a renowned equipment supplier, Asas-Alüminyum founder Safa Yavuz says the company does not want to have to deal with problems which arise from the operation of inferior plant and equipment.

“We know from experience gained with the extrusion presses from SMS Meer that the new cold-rolling mill will guarantee trouble-free operation and thus contribute to acquiring customer’s confidence. In this connection, SMS Siemag is not only a supplier to us, but also a partner.”

SMS Siemag also integrated the entire electrical and automation systems and supplied all the ancillary equipment, such as hydraulics and exhaust air systems.

Meanwhile, another important aspect included in the training of the Asas rolling mill operators, was the application of the SMS Siemag ‘plug and work’ concept before the delivery of the plant and equipment, the company says.

All functions of the rolling mill were simulated in real time in a virtual room in the Hilchenbach supplier works, in Germany, and then enhanced, the company says, noting that this provided Asas with the benefit of fast and trouble-free commissioning.

For the manufacture of the entire product range of aluminium strips and plates/sheets, SMS Siemag has supplied two slitting shearing lines and one crosscut shearing line in the cold rolling mill. These allow the cutting and finishing of coils in widths of 25 mm to 2 300 mm and sheets or plates in edge dimensions of 400 mm to 12 000 mm in the gauge range of 0.2 mm to 4.5 mm.
