Name and Location
Namibia Airports Company (Nac) airport upgrades project, Namibia.

Project Description
The Nac capital projects represent both ongoing and new projects.

The new projects will include the construction of passenger arrival terminals at Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA), Walvis Bay Airport and Ondangwa Airport.

At HKIA, which is located 45 km outside Windhoek, an office block and a head office are to be built. Meanwhile, the airport’s runway is currently undergoing rehabilitation. These upgrades are intended to offer round-the-clock service at both HKIA and Walvis Bay Airport.

At Walvis Bay Airport, Nac plans to expand the terminal and refurbish the existing taxiway and apron. The increased terminal capacity is expected to boost passenger movement from 50 passengers an hour to 250 passengers an hour and to increase retail offerings.

Further plans include the upgrading of a perimeter fence at Eros Airport, as well as improvements on the access and security control equipment at its northern hangars.

A new fire station is planned for the other smaller airport outside Windhoek, Lüderitz Airport. To enhance safety and security for passengers, the perimeter fence will also be upgraded.

Value
The upgrades are valued at N$1,2-billion.

The runway rehabilitation project at HKIA will cost N$120-million, of which N$58-million is in the form of a grant from the Namibian Ministry of Works and Transport, and the balance from Nac’s reserves.

The Walvis Bay Airport improvements will cost N$37-million. To date, some N$9,5-million has been spent on a new fire station, which will be operational in February 2011.

The Eros Airport upgrades are valued at N$4,5 million.

The upgrading of the perimeter fencing at the Lüderitz airport will cost N$11-million.

Duration
The overall upgrades will be implemented in the next five years.

The HKIA runway rehabilitation project will be completed towards the end of February 2011.

Completion dates for the upgrades at Eros Airport are March 2011 and November 2011.
