The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) has concluded a 10% wage increase with Midvaal Water Company, the union said on Thursday.

”This historic agreement with the water board will only be applicable to SAMWU members hence we urge other workers employed by Midvaal Water Company to ensure that they join SAMWU, a winning union with members’ interest at heart,” said the union’s national bargaining officer Chumani Gqeke.

In terms of the deal, workers under grades A and B will receive a 10% salary increase, 9% for grade C and 8% for grade D workers.

The union also secured an 8.5% increase for standby allowance, an 8.5% for shift allowance and 6% for travel allowance.

Gqeke said agreements on benefits such as medical aid were still outstanding.

“We thank the negotiation team from both parties for having ensured that these negotiations are completed. We urge the negotiation teams to ensure the speedy conclusion of outstanding matters such as medical aid, risk allowance and housing allowance,” Gqeke said.

”We commit ourselves to ensuring that the remaining negotiation with water boards yields better results.”

The company is responsible for bulk water supply in parts of North West.

The union has concluded agreements with other water boards such as Gauteng’s Rand Water, Amatole Water in the Eastern Cape, Bloem Water in the Free State and water supply specialists, Water Solutions Southern Africa (WSSA) that supply water and sanitation services to municipalities, industries and mines in southern African.
