MyBroadband Insights has revealed that telecommunications giant MTN has retained its status as South Africa’s best mobile network for the fourth consecutive quarter.

The fourth-quarter Mobile Network Quality Report shows that MTN “reigned supreme” with a Network Quality Score of 9.85, down slightly from its perfect score of ten in the third quarter of the year.

Vodacom achieved a network quality score of 8.01, a contraction from the 8.72 recorded in the third quarter.

Rain scored 5.58, Telkom 5.32 and Cell C 4.91 during the last quarter of the year, compared with the preceding quarter’s scores of 5.88, 6.23 and 5.58 respectively.

The report ranks South Africa's mobile networks on a network quality score, which considers download speed, upload speed and latency, based on 310 649 speed tests performed by 11 949 MyBroadband Android Speed Test App users across South Africa between October 1 and December 31, 2019.

South Africa had an average mobile download speed of 26.73 Mb/s and an average upload speed of 9.53 Mb/s.

This is an improvement on the third-quarter’s average mobile download speed of 24.68 Mb/s and an average upload speed of 9.03 Mb/s.

MTN had the highest average download speed at 40.64 Mb/s, followed by Vodacom with 32.23 Mb/s, Telkom with 21.63 Mb/s, Rain with 16.44 Mb/s and Cell C with 16.48 Mb/s.
