Mphanda Nkuwa hydropower project, Mozambique.

Project Description
The proposed project will involve the construction of a 1 500-MW hydroelectric dam at Mphanda Nkuwa, some 60 km downstream from the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric dam, on the Zambezi river.

Construction of a separate 1 400-km-long transmission line to Maputo will also take place.

Phase 1 of the project will include the construction of four turbines with a capacity of 375 MW.

Value
Phase 1 will cost about $2-billion and phase 2 about $500-million.

Duration
The project is on schedule to start construction in January 2011 and will take five to six years to complete.

Client
The dam will be 20%-owned by State-owned Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and 80%-owned by a 50:50 joint venture between Brazil’s Camargo Corrêa and Mozambique’s Energia Capital (developer of the project).

Latest Developments
Construction of the Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric dam has been approved, and it is set to become the second-largest dam in Mozambique.

The focus will now be on finalising the concession contract agreement, negotiating power purchase agreements and securing funding from financial institutions.

A power purchase agreement with Eskom is yet to be established and signed.
