Construction work at the Kyalami race track is “progressing well”, says Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit spokesperson Christo Kruger.

The 55-year-old race track is being revamped, upgraded and expanded in a multimillion-rand project by its new owner, businessperson Toby Venter.

Venter’s company, LSM Distributors, also owns the distribution rights to Porsche, Bentley and Ducati in South Africa.

Work on the 73 ha Kyalami site started in the middle of last year.

Safety Fencing

Kruger says the new race track has been completed, along with the safety fencing. Some equipment still has to be installed, however, such as a public address system and the necessary timekeeping equipment.

Work on the pit building, conference centre and dynamic handling track is continuing.

The

recent heavy rain in Gauteng has delayed the construction process, notes Kruger.

However, he is hopeful that the pit building and conference centre will be completed by the end of May.

All work should be wrapped up by October.

Bike Festival

The Kyalami race track is set to host the South Africa Bike Festival at the end of May, as well as the South Africa Festival of Motoring, which kicks off on August 31.

The track has already hosted a number of motoring-related events, such as the launch of the new Toyota Hilux.

The first racing event is scheduled for early 2017.

“Everything at the track will be world class,” says Kruger. “It will be of international quality.”
