Under this year’s theme of Building South Africa Together, the yearly Master Builders South Africa (MBSA) Congress aims to tackle economic transformation in the South African construction sector and the impact of ratings downgrades on the development and the future of the industry.

Now it its 112th year, the congress will be held in Cape Town from September 11 to 12.

The various speakers and panelists include Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Bulelani Magwanishe; Bureau for Economic Research senior economist Craig Lemboe; MBSA executive director Roy Mnisi; and Built Environment Professions Export Council CEO Con Korsten.

They will be joined by WBHO Construction chairperson Mike Wylie; South African Forum of Civil Engineering Contractors CEO Webster Mfebe; National African Federation for the Building Industry president Aubrey Tshalata; MBSA president Bafikile Bonke Simelane; Construction Sector Charter Council CEO Thabo Masombuka; Competition Commissioner Tembinkosi Bonakele; and Black Business Council in the Built Environment general secretary Gregory Mofokeng.

A representative from the Department of Economic Development is also expected to discuss the National Infrastructure Plan along with its implications and opportunities for local contractors.

The congress will also host technical breakaway sessions to enable teams of experts from various specialisations in the industry to debate the issues of occupational health and safety, skills development and regulatory, contractual and legal matters in the construction industry.
