Name and Location
Lake Turkana wind power project, Kenya.

Client
Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP), comprising KP&P Africa, Aldwych International, the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa, the Industrial Fund for Developing Countries and the Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries.

Project Description
Located on the south-eastern shore of Lake Turkana, in northern Kenya, the 310 MW wind farm will feature three hundred and sixty-five 850 kW wind turbine generators, each with a capacity of 850 kW.

The project also includes the upgrade of the existing road of about 204 km from Laisamis to the wind farm site and an access road network in and around the site for construction, operations and maintenance. Kenyan national grid company Ketraco is constructing a double-circuit 400 kV, 450 km transmission line connecting the outskirts of Nairobi to Loyangalani, near the project site. This will enable future electrification of nearby rural areas where previously there was no electricity available.

Value
€625-million.

Duration
Completion is expected in early 2017.

Latest Developments
Kenya's Lake Turkana wind power project aims to start supplying as much as 90 MW of electricity as early as September 2016, once a transmission line is built linking the remote northern region to the national grid, a director of the project has said.

The 310 MW project, originally aimed for start-up in 2011, has been delayed in part because it was awaiting a 428 km high-voltage line linking the area. The transmission line was approved in August 2014 and will take about two years to build.

The full 310 MW capacity, to be delivered by 365 wind turbines, will be in place by June or July 2017, and will rival rival other big African wind schemes in Morocco and Egypt, director of Lake Turkana Wind Power Carlo van Wageningen has said.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Vestas (wind turbines), Mott MacDonald (lenders’ technical adviser) and Ketraco (transmission line).
