Name and Location
Kariba North Bank extension (KNBE) project, Zambia.

Project Description
The KNBE extension project involves the development of a 360 MW hydropower station, more than 130 km south of Lusaka. The project will be an extension to the existing 720 MW Kariba North Bank power station, located on the Zambezi river.

This development will contribute an additional 20% of new capacity to the country’s existing installed capacity of about 1 800 MW.

It will allow Zambia to meet its growing power demands and reduce its reliance on power imports from its Southern African neighbours. The new power plant will comprise two 180 MW units, two 200 MVA transformers, three 330 kV cables and a 330 kV switchgear control.

The beneficiaries of the power will include Zambia and the Southern African Development Community.

Value
The project will cost $420-million.

Duration
Construction started in November 2008, and the plant is expected to begin commercial operations in 2013.

Client
Kariba North Bank Extension Power Corporation (KNBEPC), a subsidiary of the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (Zesco).

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Dewey & Le Boeuf (legal adviser); Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA); Fieldstone and the China Export-Import Bank (finance); Sinohydro Corporation (feasibility study); and Zesco (power purchase agreement (PPA)).

Latest Developments
The Zambian Energy Regulation Board has granted Zesco a regulatory consent to enter into a 20-year PPA agreement with KNBEPC. Under the contract, KNBEPC will supply power to Zesco at peak periods for a maximum of three-and-a-half hours a day.

On Budget and on Time?
The project is in progress.
