Kabompo Gorge hydropower project, Zambia.
Project Description
The project involves the construction of the 40-MW Kabompo Gorge hydropower station to be located between the Solwezi and Mwinilunga districts, at Kabompo Gorge, on the Kabompo river, in the copper-rich north-western region of Zambia.
The development of the plant on the Kabompo river will help reduce the constant power outages occurring in the region.
Upon completion, the unit will be integrated into Zambia's main electricity grid, through a transmission line, to the nearest Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation's substation at Lumwana.
Value
The plant will cost $120-million to build.

The project is slated for commissioning by 2015.

Latest Developments
The feasibility study on the Kabompo hydropower project has been concluded and CEC has approved the project. Construction work is expected to begin shortly.
Further, the baseline studies for the environmental- and social-impact assessment (Esia) are still in progress. Preliminary Esia baseline studies established that some households and a few churches would need to be relocated, because of their proximity to a site that would be inundated by the dam reservoir. An alternative resettlement action plan is being developed in collaboration with the relevant environmental-impact assessment consultants, the area chiefs and other stakeholders.
