Global energy group Juwi Renewable Energy is celebrating the success of the 140 MW Garob wind farm, in the Northern Cape.

The project formed part of the expanded fourth round of the Department of Energy’s (DoE’s) Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).

The 5 500 ha Garob site would accommodate 46 wind turbines, which would stand 162 m from the ground to the tips of the blade, with an overall maximum export capacity of 140 MW, Juwi MD Greg Austin explained.

“A wind farm of this magnitude has the capacity to generate clean energy for 60 000 homes and follows on the heels of our current 86 MW solar construction outside Prieska in the Northern Cape, which we will complete in 2016,” he commented.

Financial close of the project was expected in the first quarter of next year, after which construction would begin in the second quarter.

Commissioning of the wind farm would start in the first quarter of 2018, with the project to enter commercial operation in the second quarter of that year.

Juwi first approached the Garob landowners in June 2011 to negotiate and secure development rights, after which a met mast was installed to record the meteorological conditions necessary for accurate development.

The remainder of pre-bid development took place between 2012 and 2014.

For the most recent round of the REIPPPP, Juwi approached Italian utility Enel Green Power (EGP) and negotiated a deal whereby EGP would take ownership of the project when the project was named a preferred bidder.

The project was submitted to the DoE programme on August 18, 2014, with EGP taking 60% of the equity, black-owned energy group Khana 30% and the Garob local community trust 10%.
