The team of engineers that delivered the Jeffreys Bay wind farm have been shortlisted for an international engineering award.

Professional body Engineers Ireland announced the six shortlisted engineering projects in the running for the national title of ‘Engineering Project of the Year’, which were required to demonstrate the benefit made by the engineering profession to society.

This year, the shortlist featured three Irish projects, as well as three international projects – all carried out by Irish engineers – and remained open to the public to vote.

In addition to Jeffreys Bay wind farm, which was developed and built by global renewable energy company Mainstream Renewable Power, contending engineers included those involved in the construction of an iconic bridge in Dublin; the design and coordination of a light rail public transport system in Norway; the redevelopment of Ireland’s largest water treatment facility; the construction of Ireland’s longest tunnel; and the structural safety assessment of factories used by the European clothing industry in Bangladesh.

The 60-turbine 138 MW/d Jeffreys Bay plant, completed in May, was expected to supply enough electricity to power about 115 000 homes at full capacity.
