Project Description
The project entails the development of a greenfield sugar-cane plantation and an integrated bioenergy plant, near the town of Makeni, in central Sierra Leone, to produce ethanol and electricity.

The sugar-cane plantation will cover an area of 10 000 ha and is planned to process 200 t/h of cane to produce 350 000 l/d of anhydrous ethanol for export and for domestic consumption.

The bioenergy plant will feature a sugar-cane crushing facility, an ethanol distillery, and a 32 MW biomass cogeneration power plant. The project is also expected to generate 165 GWh of electricity, of which around 100 GWh will be distributed locally.

A significant component of the project is the Farmer Development Programme and Farmer Training Programme, which will be implemented with support from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture to boost food security and improve livelihoods around the project area.

The project is estimated to cost €200-million.

First production is scheduled for 2012.
