The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) will host the SA Mining Supply Chain Conference and Strategy Workshop at the Bateleur conference venue on May 22 and 23 at the Expo Centre Nasrec, in Johannesburg, alongside the inaugural Local Southern African Manufacturing Expo (LME). The event is aimed at creating awareness of new procurement requirements as included in Mining Charter III, and initiating conversations and collaboration to make the most of opportunities supported by this new context – while overcoming current challenges. Presentations and workshops will focus on practical strategies towards the development of existing capacity and capability in South Africa to meet the needs of local and regional markets, whether this be for consumables, capital goods or services. On May 22, conference attendees can look forward to sessions on the SA Mining Supply Chain in terms of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats; the implications of the Mining Charter III for the local supply chain; supplier development success stories; measuring and maximising local content; standardised codes; and export finance for capital equipment. Speakers will include representatives of government, the Minerals Council South Africa, Afrexim Bank, manufacturers, and supply chain clusters. On May 23, attendees can look forward to participating in a SA Mining Supply Chain Strategy workshop, focusing on strategies to build the local mining manufacturing supply chain and the potential scope, role and value of a South African mining services cluster. The option to attend only one day has been made available by SAIMM, and students, as well as retired members of the institute, can buy seats at a discounted rate. SAIMM is calling for mining company executives, procurement managers, members of supply chain clusters, local original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs), locally manufacturing OEMs, manufacturers of components and products for the mining supply chain as well as engineering, procurement and construction management and mining service companies to attend.
