Swiss-based inspection, verification, testing and certification services provider Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS-SA) was awarded a contract in February to provide statutory inspection services and training on lifting equipment for Egypt-based engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company Petrojet.

This one-year agreement will see one project manager and three lifting engineers moving between multiple sites examining and certifying lifting equipment and accessories.

SGS-SA inspectors will be examining lifting equipment owned or rented by Petrojet on site and in Petrojet workshops. Examination services will be conducted on equipment owned by Petrojet at regular intervals – once or twice year. Rented equipment will be verified before it is put into service, says SGS-SA.

Equipment that needs to be inspected includes forklifts, overhead cranes, chains, and wires and lifts. Most of this work will be conducted in workshops. The company notes that inspectors will receive 48 hours notice for inspections on equipment being used at external-site projects.

SGS-SA engineers will travel to several sites, including the Qattamia workshop in Cairo, the West Desert and Suez.

In Alexandria, Egypt, SGS-SA will deliver services to a marine workshop, sites in the north of the city and an ethylene project.

SGS-SA further highlights the need to ensure that the cranes, lifting and hoisting equipment operate safely. In Egypt, the company’s specialists will conduct visual testing, load testing and non-destructive testing, if necessary, to verify compliance with statutory requirements, says SGS-SA.

Inspectors will also ensure the integrity of crane girders, as well as overhead crane rails and columns. Further, it will survey line level and span crane gantry, and perform non-destructive testing of load hooks to identify cracks and visual inspections looking for distortions.

SGS-SA highlights that operational tests will assure inspectors that units are functioning properly and reliably. SGS-SA will inspect equipment prior to implementation and perform periodic testing on mechanical, structural, electrical and safety systems, as well as wire ropes and chains.

All safety devices will be examined and re-tested. Assessments to estimate remaining life and regulatory compliance will also be carried out. SGS-SA personnel will then supervise any repair work.

Experts from the company will assure Petrojet that all associated regulatory requirements have been met through independent inspection carried out in accordance with all applicable regulations, standards and engineering practices.

Inspectors will also assure those responsible that lifting equipment is in a safe and proper working condition. SGS-SA statutory inspection services will maintain equipment capability and availability to increase uptime and schedule outages to reduce operational impact.

Skilled SGS-SA engineers will provide valuable training for Petrojet lifting-equipment staff, in accordance with local and international requirements.

Further, SGS-SA lifting-equipment inspection services at Petrojet sites will include checking brakes, clutches, sheaves and wire-rope assemblies, reviewing design studies and calculations, as well as dynamic and static load testing.
