Ghannouch combined-cycle power plant, Tunisia.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of a 400-MW combined-cycle, gas-fired power unit, at Ghannouch, about 10 km north of Gabès, in southern Tunisia.

The plant will be constructed on a site occupied by an existing thermal power station, and will take advantage of its structures, such as the seawater intake and discharge facilities.

The plant will comprise a gas turbine, a steam turbine, an electric generator, a heat-recovery steam generator, a fuel and circulating water subsystem, protection and control systems, and transformers and other electric equipment, in addition to all civil, mechanical and electrical works.

The new unit will also be interconnected to the power transmission network through two 225-kV lines.

In addition, it will be fitted with two substations made up of circuit breakers, transformers, busbars and towers, as well as monitoring and control systems.

Value
The project cost is estimated at €400-million. The project is mainly financed by donors, such as the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD).

The remaining costs will be covered by the government of Tunisia.

Duration
The plant is expected to be completed by March 2011.

Client
State-owned Société Tunisienne de l’Electricité et du Gaz (Steg).
