Power utility Eskom was on Thursday morning still working to restore full power to the Klerksdorp and Carletonville areas following a fire at a transformer on Wednesday.

Eskom spokesperson Hilary Joffe said the utility had on Wednesday night supplied sufficient power to the mines in the area, including the Blyvooruitzicht mine, to ensure that workers could get to surface.

Sufficient power supply was also made available to keep emergency services at the mines going.

About 400 MW of supply were affected by the fire at the transformer. The cause of the fire was being investigated.

Joffe said repairs to the transformer were ongoing and might take some time; however, the utility was getting close to restoring most of the power supply lost on Wednesday.
