Empire State mine, US
Name of the Mine
Empire State mine.
Location
Near Gouverneur, New York State, in the US.
Mine Owner/s
Titan Mining Corporation.
Brief Description
Empire State mine (ESM) comprises a group of high-grade mines – ESM No 4 mine, which is in production, and six historic mines. The ESM No 1, No 2 and No 3, Hyatt, Pierrepont and Edwards mines are all within a 48 km radius of the mill.
Brief History
ESM No 4 mine restarted mining operations in January 2018 and began producing zinc concentrate in March 2018.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Zinc.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
None.
Geology/Mineralisation
Mineralisation is hosted within an upper marble rock unit, consisting of metamorphosed and complexly folded (silicified) marbles. The mineralisation is located primarily in hinges of large fold structures.
Reserves
None stated.
Resources
The mine hosts measured and indicated resources of 1.71-million tons, grading 11.72% and inferred mineral resources of 6.55-million tons grading 11.11%.
Type of Mine
Underground.
Mining Method
The mine uses a combination of selective longhole stoping, modified or stepped room-and-pillar and mechanised cut-and-fill mining methods.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
The mine is fully developed with shaft access and mobile equipment on site. Existing surface facilities at the mine include a maintenance shop, offices, mine dry, primary crusher, mine ventilation fans, a 12 000 t covered concentrate storage building, a rail siding, a warehouse, and storage buildings.
Underground, a crusher is in place and capable of feeding a surface flotation concentrator with a nameplate capacity of 5 000 t/d.
Prospects
Titan announced the discovery of the Kilbourne graphite trend, an extensively drill-tested graphite-bearing trend located on the permitted lands hosting ESM.
The company believes that the Kilbourne target has the potential to host between 3.36-million tons and 26.25-million tons of graphitic carbon, contained within 210-million to 1.1-billion tons grading 2% to 4.5% graphitic carbon.
This is a significant discovery because there are no domestic sources for natural flake graphite in the US.
