Denel meeting mine-resistant vehicle contract from Namibia
South African defence group Denel reported on Thursday that its subsidiary, Denel Vehicle Systems, was on track to complete an export order to Namibia by the end of March. The order is for eight RG32M vehicles and four Self Defence Remotely Operated Weapon (SDROW) stations. The group described the contract as “a substantial one” but gave no monetary value for it.
The mine-resistant light armoured RG32M vehicles being delivered to Namibia have been modified for operations in that country. These changes are based on experience gained from the use of RG32Ms by other countries in other parts of Africa, as well as Asia, the Balkans and the Middle East.
The RG32M can carry five soldiers, with their kit and special purpose equipment. It is fitted with four side doors plus roof hatches, making it easy to get into and out of, whether under routine or emergency conditions. “It can operate in a variety of roles and offers an ideal balance of protection and mobility,” stated Denel.
The SDROW is fitted with a light machine gun. Light in weight, it is designed to be easily fitted on a range of vehicle platforms. Depending on the weapon fitted to the SDROW, it can have an effective range of more than 600 m. “The system can be operated remotely by one crew member from under cover, including all weapons functions such as cocking, safety and firing.”
