Consumers urged to save water as Gauteng’s dam levels decrease
Dam levels in the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS) continued to decrease to 75.5% this week, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) said on Wednesday.
The system’s water levels were lower than last week’s 76.4%, but higher than the 51.8% recorded at the same time last year.
The IVRS comprises 14 dams that serve the province and major industries including Sasol and Eskom.
The Vaal dam decreased to 85.6% this week from 86.5% last week, while the Katse dam is on the upswing this week to 27.1%, compared with 26.5% last week.
Sitting at 93% this week, the Sterkfontein dam recorded an increase of 0.3% from 92.7% last week.
The Grootdraai dam this week recorded a 1.9% decrease to 77%. Last week, the dam was at 78.9%.
The Bloemhof dam decreased to 91.3% from last week’s 94.5%.
Despite the forecast of some rainfall in Gauteng over the last few days, there has been little impact on the IVRS.
In light of this situation, the DWS is calling on consumers to spare no effort in making sure that last year’s grim situation of severe water shortages is not repeated. In this regard, water users are called upon to use the depleting resource wisely and sparingly.
