Diversified engineering company Metso in March announced the successful delivery and installation of more than 70 of its Neles globe valves for Phase II of Chinese organic chemicals producer Henan Longyu Coal Chemical’s project in Henan province, China, which will culminate in the production of 400 000 t of acetic acid a year and 200 000 t of ethylene glycol a year.

Key installations during this project include an acetic acid plant, ethylene glycol production equipment, a coal gasification plant, an air separation unit, a gas synthesis and purification system, sulfur recovery unit, public works and auxiliary production facilities. The project covers an area of about 400 000 ha and is valued at about $72-million. The project is an initiative from Yongcheng County in Shangqiu, in Henan province, to become a leading strategic player in China’s coal chemical industry.

The valves have been operating in extreme conditions and have successfully demonstrated the safety and reliability of Metso’s technology. Metso severe service valves featuring the company’s Omega multistage trim design can tackle tough anti-cavitation and noise reduction applications, lowering operating costs and limiting the need for valve spare parts and other accessories, which, in turn, means a lower total cost of ownership.

“The cost effectiveness of our products is one of the key reasons the customer chose Metso technology. Our delivery period of less than six months ensured that our client’s project could move forward as scheduled. Our client is extremely pleased with this collaboration,” says Metso account manager Lyu Liming.

Meanwhile, Metso announced, also in March, that it has been selected to supply flow control technology to the Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas Gas Berhad’s gas processing plant modernisation project in Kerteh, Terengganu, Malaysia. The new flow control solutions will replace the plant’s existing equipment and enable the plant to reach a higher safety integrity level while improving its environmental performance. The order includes over 140 actuated on-off and emergency shutdown (ESD) ball and butterfly valves.

The order was placed by turnkey solutions provider consortium Toyo Japan and Toyo Malaysia. Toyo will provide engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning through a turnkey contract to expand the plant life for another 20 years. “Metso is a well-known and trusted valve manufacturer with a good product history and extensive industry experience,” says Toyo Engineering Asia Pacific project division head Yoshiro Kawauchi.

“With Metso’s flow control technology, the plant will be able to further reduce fugitive emissions using the proven live-loaded stem packing design and by meeting the stringent ISO 15858 standards. The ESD valves will be equipped with automated partial stroke testing capabilities to improve plant safety. Metso is a global technology leader in partial stroke test devices with our Neles ValvGuard solution,” says Metso regional energy and hydrocarbon sales manager Tony Tan.

The deliveries to the Dew Point Control Unit 2 have been completed and successfully installed. The deliveries to Gas Processing Plant 4 are ongoing. These orders have been included in Metso’s third quarter 2013 and second quarter 2014 orders received.

Wide Portfolio for Demanding Process Applications
Metso has a strong position in control valves for the petrochemical, chemical, oil and gas, and power industries and is well known for its Neles rotary control valves, globe valves and intelligent valve controller offerings. Neles standard and severe service globe valves represent an important element in Metso’s extensive portfolio of control valves, as the technology plays a key role in most critical processes that operate at extreme pressures and temperatures.

“Neles globe valves offer an innovative and fundamentally simple construction with excellent operational and maintenance features to improve process performance at the lowest cost. When paired with our internationally acclaimed Neles ND9000 intelligent valve controllers, these devices provide a very smooth response for exceptional process stability as well as remote diagnostics for highly cost-effective predictive maintenance.

“Neles globe valves are used in a wide variety of applications. Metso also offers a specially designed steam-conditioning valve. Each of our offerings is available in a variety of seat, seal, trim, and actuation options to make them ideal for a wide range of process conditions,” says Metso automation globe valve product line director Markus Hauhia.

Valve Experience
Metso has a long track record of delivering engineered performance and reliability to the oil and gas industry with leading brands Neles, Jamesbury and Mapag. In more than 90 years, Metso has delivered millions of valves, control valves and on-off valves globally and has become one of the leading suppliers of intelligent valve controllers. Metso’s valve technology and services offering helps improve production efficiency and reduce safety risks throughout the life cycle of a plant, all the way from simplifying valve selection to improving process availability and significantly improving production performance.

All of this is backed by field service expertise from currently over 55 Metso Automation service hubs and over 30 valve service centers around the world. Automation’s valve technology and supply centers are located in Finland, the US, Germany, China, South Korea, India and Brazil.
