Law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr on Friday said its mergers and acquisition (M&A) team had achieved first place by deal value for South African firms in Mergermarket M&A Africa and Middle East 2015 Global League Tables for Africa and the Middle East.

The group also secured twelfth place internationally for increasing its deal value from $9.2-billion in 2014 to $18.8-billion in 2015, despite a relatively weak performance for deal activity in the region.

“According to the data released mid-January, total deal value of $47.3-billion from 428 deals in the Middle East and Africa [in 2015] was 20.9% behind 2014, despite the $11.4-billion acquisition of South Africa-based Mediclinic by UAE-based Al Noor announced in the fourth quarter providing a much needed boost,” the company said in a statement on Friday.

In the deal count category, Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr came second for Africa and the Middle East after registering 36 deals.

In buyouts by deal value in Europe, Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr was the first South African firm and fifteenth internationally.
