Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation is today participating in the Africa Rail exhibition in Johannesburg. The event will offer a showcase for the company’s latest offerings and increasing experience in the rail market across Africa.

Bombardier provides the full spectrum of rail solutions, ranging from complete trains to sub-systems, maintenance services, system integration and signalling. In South Africa and across the continent, Bombardier has a strong commitment to invest in local manufacturing capacity, training and improving the skills development of local employees, while working with local suppliers, partners and customers to achieve the same objectives. As a key supplier to the African market, Bombardier Transportation South Africa delivered the design and supply of the core electrical and mechanical systems for Gautrain, including a fleet of 96 BOMBARDIER ELECTROSTAR vehicles, as well as providing 15 years of maintenance services together with our local Broad Based Black Empowerment partners.

In addition to various maintenance and services contracts for the Africa Rail industry Bombardier is delivering 240 BOMBARDIER TRAXX Africa locomotives for the general freight business of Transnet Freight Rail. This contract was signed in March; the order is part of the largest locomotive supply project in South Africa’s history.  Bombardier is the market leader in delivering rail control in Africa with its advanced, globally proven BOMBARDIER INTERFLO mainline rail control solutions the technology of choice across eight projects, from South Africa to Zambia to Morocco and Algeria. These include solutions for Durban’s main corridors and the Gautrain rapid rail link in South Africa.

In Zambia, Bombardier, with Huawei International Plc Limited and GMC Technologies (Zambia) Ltd, is equipping the Livingstone to Chingola line. In Algeria, work is ongoing on the first European Rail Traffic Management System electronic interlocking system. A new project is underway for the Casablanca – Tangiers connection in Morocco.

Bombardier’s cutting edge rail control solutions not only cover mainline and mass transit, but the driverless INTERFLO 150 computer-based system is purpose-developed for mining and industrial applications. Projects operating today include the Kiruna mine in Sweden, Esmeralda and Teniente copper mines in Chile and delivery is underway for the Grasberg Block Cave in Indonesia.
