Blantyre–Zomba road reconstruction project, Malawi.
Project Description
The project involves the reconstruction of the existing 60 km long road that connects the southern commercial hub of Blantyre with the old capital city of Zomba. The road currently transverses the three districts of Blantyre, Chiradzulu and Zomba.
The project will include chip seal surface dressing, construction of the road base and subbase in crushed stone, construction of the subbase in gravel, and construction of the embankments and reinforced concrete box culverts.
Value
The project is estimated at 26,7-million African Development Bank (AfDB) units of account.
Duration
The project will be implemented over a five-year period.

The Malawi Roads Authority (MRA).

Latest Developments
The MRA has invited eligible contractors to tender for prequalification with regard to the implementation of the Blantyre–Zomba road reconstruction project, which will be developed as part of the Malawi Trunk Road Rehabilitation Programme, using proceeds of a loan obtained from the AfDB.
It is expected that the invitation for bids will be made in March 2011.
