Name and Location
Biomass project, Buchanan, Liberia.

Project Description
The long-term Buchanan biomass project rehabilitates Liberia’s rubber plantations by processing nonproductive rubber trees into wood chips that are used for electricity generation.

The current expansion stage will raise the current output of 100 000 t/y produced by the existing wood chip production facility, located at the Port of Buchanan, in Grand Bassa county, to two-million tons a year. A new materials handling unit will be installed at the port as part of the project.

The project will take advantage of the existing backlog of 60-million tons of biomass to transform the rubber plantation industry by paying farmers to uproot end-of-life rubber trees and planting new ones.

The wood chips are intended for export to Europe and also for use as fuel for biomass power plants.

Value
The project is estimated at $143,6-million.

Duration
The expansion will be completed in 2017.

Client
Buchanan Renewables Fuel.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
