Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), South Africa’s air traffic management (ATM) agency, has assumed responsibility for air traffic services at Grand Central Airport, in Gauteng province, with effect from Monday. Privately-owned Grand Central, in Midrand, about halfway between Johannesburg and Pretoria, is a significant general aviation and flying training airport.

“We look forward to working with the Grand Central Airport,” affirmed ATNS CEO Nozipho Mdawe. “ATNS remains committed to delivering a customer-centric and cost-effective product and services experience to all our customers as we have done for the past 30 years – with a zero-accident record.”

The assumption of ATM at the airport followed the awarding to ATNS of a service contract by Grand Central. It became operational with the issuing to ATNS, by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), of a Certificate of Unit Approval for the ATNS team at Grand Central Airport. This meant that ATNS’ ATM operations at the airport would be compliant with both SACAA and International Civil Aviation Organisation regulations and standards.

“[This contract is] a vote of confidence in our unrivalled innovative, safe and efficient air traffic navigation and training solutions, which are not only competitive, but also meet global standards and best practice,” she highlighted.

ATNS now provides ATM and navigation services to all nine of Airports Company South Africa airports, plus 12 regional airports across the country. ATNS’ contract for such services at city-owned Wonderboom National Airport in Pretoria was renewed less than six months ago. The ATM agency also has a “footprint” in 24 other African countries, plus on the South Atlantic island of St Helena.
