Top research award for Wits academic
The National Research Foundation (NRF) has awarded the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) another accolade by awarding a C2 rating to staff member Professor Rudrajit Mitra.
This follows the School of Mining Engineering’s improvement of its standing in the global QS World University Rankings two weeks ago.
Mitra, who is an associate professor and centennial chair of rock engineering, is now one of four academics in the school who hold this level of professional recognition.
All four are based at Wits Mining School.
Professor Dick Stacey, Professor Cuthbert Musingwini and Professor Fred Cawood are the other three NRF-rated researchers at Wits Mining School.
Mitra’s award comes on the strength of 112 research outputs over the past eight years – including five book chapters, 37 journal articles and 49 conference papers. As a lecturer, he has also supervised or cosupervised 11 PhD students to graduation, two master’s students and 67 honours students.
