Name and Location
Ankerlig and Gourikwa open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) conversion project, Western Cape, South Africa.

Client
Eskom.

Project Description
Eskom is poised to proceed with the conversion of its Ankerlig and Gourikwa OCGTs to dual-fuel facilities.

The conversion will enable the OCGTs to operate on diesel and gas.

Value
The project is estimated at R1.8-billion.

Duration
The 14 units will be converted during planned outages in 2016, with the first two units scheduled for shutdowns during the first quarter of this year. The outages are planned based on the operating hours of each gas turbine.

Latest Developments
Contracts have been placed with two international energy providers.

Sulzer has been awarded the contract for the conversion of the nine Ankerlig units and Siemens for the five Gourikwa units.

The conversion is being undertaken despite Eskom not yet having secured the gas to replace the diesel. Engineering News has reported, though, that State-owned oil company PetroSA, which uses gas at its Mossel Bas gas-to-liquids facility, could supply the first unit at Gourikwa, which is close to Mossgas, later this year.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Sulzer (Ankerlig OCGT conversion) and Siemens (Gourikwa OCGT conversion).

On Budget and on Time?
