Alcatel to upgrade EASSy cable system to broaden capacity
Communications solutions provider Alcatel-Lucent this week said it planned to upgrade the East African coast’s 10 000 km submarine cable system with the latest 100 Gb/s technology.
The 4.72 Tb/s, two fibre-pair Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy) undersea cable, which went live in July 2010 with a then upgraded 3.84 Tb/s design capacity and a 25-year life, connects South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, Kenya, Comores, Somalia, Djibouti and Sudan with multiple other submarine cable networks from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.
The NYSE-listed company said that its 100 Gb/s technology would enable the system to ultimately carry capacity in excess of 10 Tb/s.
“Since EASSy entered service in 2010, we have seen enormous growth in demand for capacity on the system … This upgrade will add an additional 400 Gb/s of capacity throughout the system, using Alcatel-Lucent’s advanced coherent 100 Gb/s technology, and enables us to take a further step in offering our customers the ultra-broadband capacity needed for innovative services and applications,” explained EASSy management committee chairperson Chris Wood.
The upgrade would further boost broadband capacity and strengthen onward connectivity between Eastern and Southern Africa and Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
EASSy is owned and operated by a group of 17 telecommunications operators and service providers, 92% of which were Africa-based, including South Africa’s MTN, Neotel, Telkom and Vodacom.
