Al Kufra well field water supply system, Libya
Name and Location
Al Kufra well field water supply system, Libya.
Project Description
The Al Kufra well field water supply project will serve as an extension to the existing Great Man-Made River (GMMR) system, which comprises an underground network of pipes and aqueducts, that carry water from the Nubian Sandstone aquifer system to the southern Sahara desert, in Libya.
It consists of more than 1 300 wells, and supplies some 6 500 000 m3/d of potable water to urban cities in the north.
The Al Kufra well field will make provision for an additional 1,68-million cubic metres of water a day to flow to the GMMR main spine, and also increase the hydraulic capacity of the existing conveyance systems to transport this additional flow with ease.
Value
The project is valued at $450-million.
Duration
The project is scheduled for completion in 2015.
Client
The Great Man-Made River Authority (GMMRA).
Key Contracts and Suppliers
SNC-Lavalin (design and construction of the well field water supply system).
Latest Developments
The GMMRA has awarded a $450-million contract to Canada's SNC-Lavalin to develop the Al Kufra well field. The contract's mandate includes the design of the water supply system and all construction work related to connecting the new well field to the existing water distribution system.
Other activities to be undertaken include the installation of collector pipes, pumps in 300 deep wells, as well as a power supply and communications system.
