President Jacob Zuma has appointed development economist Thomas Swabihi Moyane as a South African Revenue Services (Sars) commissioner, effective September 27.

The Presidency said in a statement that Moyane would bring more than 30 years’ experience to the position, having worked as a senior executive in various government and private sector entities.

Moyane, who recently served as the adviser on turnaround and security strategies at the State Information Technology Agency, had previously served as national commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, CEO of the Government Printing Works, MD of Engen Mozambique and chief director for industry and enterprise development at the Department of Trade and Industry.

He held a BSc in Economics from the Eduardo Mondlane University, in Mozambique, and a diploma in consulting to small business from the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg.

“I thank the President and the Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene for the confidence they have bestowed upon me. I look forward to working with the successful team at Sars to assist [in taking] forward all priority development programmes and policies,” he noted.
