Name and Location
Zabrze multifuel combined heat and power (CHP) plant, Poland.

Client
Fortum Corporation.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of a new multifuel CHP plant, in Zabrze, Poland.

The plant will replace the purely coal-fired, outdated units in Zabrze and Bytom. Although it will primarily be fuelled by refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and coal, it will also be able to use biomass and a mixture of fuels. Of the total fuel use, an estimated 50% RDF could be used. The residential and industrial waste for RDF will be sourced locally.

The investment is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of operations and reduce carbon dioxide and other emissions in the area.

The plant will have a production capacity of 220 MW, including 145 MW of heat and 75 MW of electricity, with production estimated at about 730 GWh and 550 GWh of heat and electricity respectively.

Value
€200-million.

Duration
The new plant is expected to start commercial operation by the end of 2018.

Latest Developments
Construction of the CHP is expected to begin in the European summer, subject to the local environmental-impact assessment process and other negotiations.
