The journey to the top for many of the country’s most talented young footballers continues as the winners of the regional Engen Knockout Challenge competitions face-off for the Engen Champ of Champs title in early October.
The 2016 Engen Knockout Challenge crowned regional champions in Port Elizabeth, Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Johannesburg respectively. These teams plus host club Supersport United are set to converge on the High Performance Centre at the University of Pretoria on the weekend of 7–9 October to determine which XI will hold ultimate bragging rights for 2016.
Supersport United will be joined by Chippa United (Port Elizabeth), Umqhele High School (Durban), Roo Stars (Bloemfontein), Old Mutual Football Academy (Cape Town) and Orlando Pirates (Johannesburg).
The high number of scout’s present at this year’s five regional events bears testament to the high calibre of footballing talent that the Engen Knockout Challenge continues to be famed for.
Engen Group Sponsorship Manager, Brad Bergh says the Engen Knockout Challenge continues to provide a platform for South Africa’s aspiring footballers to launch their professional football careers. “Engen is proud to be a part of the development of these young future football stars, further contributing to the realisation of their dream of being signed professionally,” says Bergh. South African national under-17 coach, Molefi Ntseki attended two of the five events in 2016. Regional representatives of SAFA were also in attendance, as were coaches and scouts from both local and foreign professional clubs.
Fans can follow the latest news about the Engen Champ of Champs via the Engen Soccer website and Facebook page. The hashtags used for the duration of the tournament are: - #ECOC2016 and #YourJourneyStartsHere.
