WTO starts director-general selection process
Each of the nine candidates nominated for the position of World Trade Organisation (WTO) director-general would this week deliver presentations outlining their vision for the organisation during a WTO general council meeting.
The global body announced earlier this month that it had received nine nominations for possible successors to outgoing director-general Pascal Lamy, whose second four-year term of office expires on August 31.
The candidates include former Ghanaian Minister of Trade, Industry and President’s Special Initiatives Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen and United Nations (UN) assistant secretary-general and deputy executive director of the UN Environment Programme Amina Mohamed from Kenya.
Costa Rica’s Foreign Trade Minister Anabal González, former Indonesian Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, New Zealand Minister of Trade, Minister for Climate Change Issues and Associate Minister Foreign Affairs Tim Groser, Jordan’s former Trade and Industry Minister Ahmad Thougan Hindawi, Mexico’s former Trade and Industry Minister Herminio Blanco, the Republic of Korea’s Trade Minister Taeho Bark and permanent representative of Brazil to the WTO Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo, have also been nominated.
Following their presentations, each of the candidates would face a question and answer session, whereafter they would each hold a press conference.
The WTO expected to choose a successor by May 31.
