Nine candidates have been nominated by their respective governments as possible successors to outgoing World Trade Organisation (WTO) director-general Pascal Lamy, whose second four-year term of office expires on August 31.

The candidates include former Ghanaian Minister of Trade, Industry and President’s Special Initiatives Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen and United Nations (UN) assistant secretary-general and deputy executive director of the UN Environment Programme Amina Mohamed from Kenya.

Costa Rica’s Foreign Trade Minister Anabal González, former Indonesian Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, New Zealand Minister of Trade, Minister for Climate Change Issues and Associate Minister Foreign Affairs Tim Groser, Jordan’s former Trade and Industry Minister Ahmad Thougan Hindawi, Mexico’s former Trade and Industry Minister Herminio Blanco, the Republic of Korea’s Trade Minister Taeho Bark and permanent representative of Brazil to the WTO Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo, have also been nominated.

A formal general council meeting will be held on January 29, where candidates will present themselves to the membership, followed by a final decision by the general council and the conclusion of the selection process by May 31.
