WSP in Africa, one of the largest multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firms on the continent, are proud to have been involved in the 2018 Winning Projects in the Corporate Head Office, Industrial and Rural Development categories of the SAPOA Property Development Awards for Innovative Excellence, as announced on 21 June.

The winning projects included:

Corporate Head Office – PWC Tower

The Tower in Waterfall, located in Midrand, is the new headquarters building for PWC in South Africa. Owned by Attacq and developed by Atterbury, the R1.5 billion Tower is the first high-rise building developed within the booming precinct, and is visible from almost anywhere within a 30km radius.

WSP provided mechanical engineering services, including HVAC design, on this project. The Tower has also been designed to conform to the internationally recognised LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver standard. LEED is a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes and neighbourhoods.

Industrial Development – BMW Midrand Campus

The BMW South Africa warehouse facility in Midrand was proved to be too small to implement the company’s planned model offensive strategy. In April 2017, the company decided to repurpose the 20,000m2 warehouse – converting 10,000m2 into training facilities, and A-grade office space for 534 members of its local staff faculty.

WSP was appointed for traffic engineering services on the BMW Midrand Campus upgrades, where WSP also developed a solution that enabled existing accesses, with minimum disruption to operations – and the company’s recommendations afforded significant cost savings on road upgrades around this project.

Rural Development – Bambanani Junction Retail Development

The Bambanani retail development is a 18,000 m² single-level, semi-enclosed mall, located in Diepsloot, Johannesburg.

WSP was appointed for the concept and detail design, construction documentation, contract management and site supervision/monitoring for the development. WSP supported Nthwese Properties, as the owner developer, in navigating a number of challenges – from securing funding to community unrest, and flooding from an overflowing sewer into the construction area – and assist in finding solutions to bring this project to successful completion.

Mathieu du Plooy, Managing Director of WSP in Africa, said: “We are honoured by these awards as they highlight our strong and forward-looking approach and commitment to excellence, with every project we’re involved in. We understand that engineering is about asking questions, looking at complex problems from different angles, and finding intelligent solutions that break paradigms. And, I would like to congratulate and thank each of our experts involved in these projects, as well as congratulate our clients, on these prestigious achievements.”
