The Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP), which identifies and links industrial companies to opportunities, has resulted in the establishment of fuel pump reconditioning business Siyavana Solutions.

Under WISP, GreenCape identified that Siyavana could develop an upcycling solution for decommissioned fuel pumps at energy multinational Shell.

Siyavana refurbishes the pumps and resells them to Shell at a reduced cost. Thus far, the project has generated R4-million a year in additional revenue, nine new jobs and diverted waste from landfills.

WISP is a City of Cape Town-funded platform facilitated free of charge to businesses by its special business partner GreenCape. Under the programme, GreenCape develops mutually profitable links between companies from all industrial sectors, so that under-used and waste resources from one company can be recovered, reprocessed and re-used by others, says City of Cape Town economic opportunities and asset management MMC Alderman James Vos.

"It’s a solution that allows participating businesses to cut costs, improve processes, create new revenue streams and job opportunities, all while positively impacting on the environment through the repurposing of waste.

"A more sustainable future depends on programmes such as WISP and I look forward to seeing it expand to the benefit of all in Cape Town," he comments.
