Name and Location
Wind farm projects, Northern Cape, South Africa.

Client
The project is being developed by a consortium comprising Mainstream Renewable Power; Actis, through its Actis Energy 3 Fund; Thebe Investment Corporation; The IDEAS Managed Fund, managed by Old Mutual Investment Group; Futuregrowth Asset Management and Genesis Eco-Energy, in partnership with Lereko Metier Sustainable Capital; and local community members through established community trusts.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of three wind farms with a combined capacity of 360 MW in the Northern Cape.

The projects reached financial close in February this year and include:
• the 140 MW Khobab Wind Farm, located in the district municipality of Namakwa;
• the 140 MW Loeriesfontein 2 Wind Farm, located in the district municipality of Namakwa; and
• the 80 MW Noupoort Wind Farm, located in the local municipality of Umsobomvu.

A consortium led by Mainstream Renewable Energy was awarded the contracts for the wind farms by the Department of Energy under the third round of its Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).

Value
The wind farms represent an estimated investment of R9-billion. The debt for the projects has been arranged and underwritten by Barclays and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.

Duration
Construction of the wind farms were expected to start in February this year.

The Noupoort Wind Farm is expected to start commercial operation by mid-2016

Latest Developments
The Noupoort Wind Farm project broke ground on July 10, as one of the first projects to start construction as part of the third round REIPPPP.

The wind farm will comprise 35 wind turbines when completed and is expected to generate about 305 000 MWh/y of renewable energy to the national grid, supplying enough electricity to power about 70 000 average South African homes and avoid an estimated 300 000 t/y of carbon emissions.

The turbines will be supplied by Siemens, with the 99 m turbine towers to be the first manufactured at the new Gestamp wind turbine tower factory in Atlantis, in the Western Cape.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Murray & Roberts and Conco (construction contractor) and Siemens Wind (supply and installation of the wind turbines).
