WILLFUL BLINDNESS

Determined reportage by News24, which has exposed in detail the circumstances surrounding the murder of whistleblower Babita Deokaran, leave a little room for doubt that some Gauteng officials were chillingly incompetent and insensitive at best, if not complicit. Deokaran was killed in a drive-by shooting outside her home only weeks after she called for an inquiry into R850-million-worth of suspicious payments made at Tembisa Hospital. The reports show that Deokaran openly expressed fears for her safety after requesting a detailed audit of the hospital’s buying patterns. She never received protection.
